Doc brought back a bottle of the Rogue DCS for Mic Control, knowing full well that the MC would lap it up like a puppy at the water bowl. A great chat ensued, making the lads simultaneously hungry and thirsty...it is a wonder they were ever able to complete the show!

MC Mic Control ruled the roost while DJ Doc was gambolling about the Oregon Coast. Ol' Doc took time out from his busy string of personal experiences (a polite way of saying he was run out of town wherever he stayed) to call in live from the Rogue Public House in Astoria, Oregon. Doc went into explicit detail about his Kobe beef dog (Before your mind takes you places it shouldn't, it was his dinner menu item at Rogue), and also about the exquisite beers he was sampling. MC was salivating through most of the interview, but managed to keep things together, Thanks to the folks at the Rogue Public House and Rogue Brewery for an incredible experience, and both the MC and the DJ look forward to further sampling of your wares!

Stinky hot. Compared to other parts of the country, likely not...but for here, stiflingly hot. Sucks the life right out of you. A little humidity (again, nothing like Ontario humidity), and all you want to do is catch up on the sleep you didn't get the night before. Of course, you could be like MC Mic Control and not sleep at all during SkaFest week. He's been commuting back and forth between Nanaimo and Victoria...working during the day, and at night magically transforming himself into "Ska-Man"! Skanking out like no-one can, that's our MC.

Ol' DJ Doc, he's finally tying the knot...again! It is a very happy occasion...apparently there will be an Elvis sighting as part of the nuptials. Wow...what a long stange trip it was! MC Mic Control and DJ Doc hunkered down in the studio tonight and broadcast for 5 hours straight...talk about keeping it up...ummm...the great music, we mean! Looking like Smilin' Bob most of the night, the lads did their normal, irregular show, then they covered In the Red for the following two hours...playing the best rock of all ages. There was actually a sixth hour of in-studio production for the live broadcast of the Sweatshop Union from the NCRA conference over on Gabriola Island...six hours in all! The boys were exhausted (as were the DJ and the MC), but remember...they do it all for you...only you!

One of the blogs that DJ Doc checks out on a regular basis is the Rave and Roll blog, hosted by Miss Parker. She is a devotee and afficionado of great music...more specifically, music in that alt-80's vein...tending to the rare and obscure. Thanks to all who phoned in with pledges in support of CHLY's semi-annual FunDrive...with your support we were able to reach our goal of $20,000! It is always a fun show...MC brings in the synth, Doc brings in his EWI, the boys patch direct to the board, and musical insanity ensues. You phone in with a pledge, make a request, and the lads do their utmost to fulfil your needs! This year, ersthile Loom co-host Spidey swam over from the Mainland, and was just over-the-top with the game he brought to the table.

We did something a little different this year...the Impending Loom and In The Red joined forces for two hours of begging, pleading, and cajoling listeners to part with their hard-earned cash. It was simply insane, and we'll be sure to do it again in six months.

The Carpenters vs. Oasis? Only Go Home Productions could come up with such a wonderful mashup combination in "Carpenter's Wonderwall". That's what the MC and the DJ like so much about mashups...not all of them work, but when they do they can be a work of hyper-creative art. "What were they thinking?" is a question that arises when we are laughing off our collective keesters in the studio, especially when the artist hits it out of the park with a specially-crafted combination. GHP (Mark Vidler) is a pioneer masher with a rock-solid pedigree. Special mention this week to Voicedude, who is always consistently good!

Every mid-April, the MC's thoughts turn to hops, marley, and malt...the annual Nanaimo Beer Festival. This gathering of brewers from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and upstate Washington pleases the MC no end, to the point where he will Leave the Loom in Doc's capable hands while he samples the wares of the many purveyors of the foamy potables. We'll get a report from him in the next blog postine...we all want to hear more about Longwood Brewing's "Framboise"...the one with "the silky pink head."

Can you believe it? MC Mic Control had to leave the show a half hour early today...because he forgot his laundry at a local laundromat and they closed at 8:00 pm (the same time the Loom ends). That would explain why he wasn't wearing any pants during the show, but not that he seemed quite comfortable in the pantsless mode. Doc seemed both nonplussed and unperturbed...as if this was a normal occurrence! Could it be that he's so old he just doesn't care any more? Only his hairdresser knows for sure!

A few shouts out (shout outs?) (Governor-Generals or Governors-General?)...first, a Loom-lunged toot on the ol' digeridoo to Philly Jo, who called us in the studio all the way from Australia! With the time difference it was the middle of next week over there, but he took the time to give us a shout and make a request...the Pocket Rockets version of the Sailor Moon Theme. Earlier in the week, the Doctor got to attend both Women's Ice Hockey Semi-finals, and the whole country giggled with delight as the IOC got their fluffy knickers in a knot over the Canadian Women and their post-gold celebration involving beer and cigars at centre ice. Yeah, like that has never happened before at any arena from Port Alberni to Port aux Basques!

MC Mic Control was announcing and DJ'ing last night up at the VIU gym, and DJ Doc was MC'ing the 11th JazzFest over at the Port Theatre. Talk about switching roles! Doc came in for the first hour of the show, then DJ Otto Mattick took over for the final two hours. We're not posting the playlist, as it was rather brief and entirely not worth your while. We'll be back next week with a vengance!

MC Mic Control was in the house tonight...for the first time in 2010! That meant an insane amount of giddiness and goofball behaviour as he and DJ Doc rocked the beats right from the outset. The lads were helped by a timely on-air phone call from none other than The Only Dean From Mudge Island...or so he says! Has anyone taken the time to check the census records and voters lists to see if this is actually the case, or should he simply be taken at his word? In any case, the Loomers agree that people should check out The Only Dean's show, "The Morning Fog"...Thuesday mornings from 6:30 to 9:00, right here on CHLY.

Another Friday during basketball season meant that the MC was up at the VIU gym holding court (as it were), covering off the announcing duties for the night. Rumour has it that MC Mic Control is being recruited to play point guard next season...way to step up! He's got a basketball jones...

DJ Doc flexed his pecs while he worked the decks (a truly frightening sight). Twas a fun-filled excursion this week, and thank you to everyone who called in...the joint was jumpin'! Indeed it was, and both the MC and the DJ were in fine form! Butch Goring's helmet was the main topic of conversation (for some obscure reason), and you probably learned more about his lid than you needed to. Bwahahahahaha! What a spooktacle it was! The MC and the DJ kickin' out the Loom...Hallowe'en style! We're using too many exclamation points!!!!!

It was great fun as always, with just a little more than the requisite amount of cheese. Who among us did not look forward to a rather large dollop of cheese in our Hallowe'en baskets? MC Mic Control never minded a little mozzarella, so long as it was accompanied by a pizza. DJ Doc always preferred a stout cheddar. The cheddar always kept better than the hot sticky mozzarella. A sly "zeppelin" reference in the title for the show from this week...only because a caller phoned the CHLY Program Manager and complained about one of the songs that we played! "Crank Up The Bass" by KAOS samples a little Led Zep off the top, and the caller felt that we should not play any music that would disrespect Led Zeppelin in such a manner. Of course, the MC and the DJ took that as a challenge, and played just about every cover or reworked version of a Zeppelin tune that we could lay our greasy little mitts on! Play we did, and had far too much fun doing it...Mojochronic's "Yuletide Zeppelin" is far and away Doc's personal favourite.

That's right, it was our week to clean the station! One of the joys of community-based campus radio is that everyone has to pitch in, beyond the normal programming and production duties. Elbows were greased, noses were put to grindstones, and the Hoover Manoeuver actually worked...the place was spotless and sparkling clean! Once agin, the MC had to leave early, and nearly drove into a ditch when he heard Doc play the MSR Singers and "Oh That Zipper On My Pants"!

Yes indeed, the MC turns 33 on the 25th, so we celebrated during the Loom! He was quite appreciative of the birthday basket o' goodies that DJ Doc gave him...ironically, they were all beer-related. A birthday card that doubles as a coaster, a pocket-sized beer guide (useful, one presumes, for identifying pocket-sized beer), and a bottle of Innis & Gunn Canadian Cask...a bottle of Scottish beer that spent some time maturing in Canadian rye whiskey barrels (unlike MC Mic Control, who has spent no time maturing whatsoever).

It has been a crazy few weeks here in Impending Loom land. First, DJ Doc was away on his annual vacation excursion...visiting such places as Vernon, New Denver, Cranbrook, Kananaskis, Red Deer, and Valemount...thanks to all who fed and watered, as well as providing a bale of hay upon which to rest a weary head. Second, MC Mic Control was doing his annual thing last week at the Victoria Ska Festival. The Kiltlifters rocked, and a highlight was the MC and the Swedish Meatball dancing in their terrycloth bathrobes on stage with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones! Well kids, DJ Doc managed to cover the first hour of the show before handing the baton to MC Mic Control for the remainder of the evening. The MC was running late (natch), while the DJ had to put on his MC hat for a big jazz event here in little ol' Nanaimoville. A fine time was had by all concerned.

Doc and Mic Control joined forces later on that night in a local ten piece band called Decadence. Helmed by Steve Jones (the Sol Hurok of Nanaimo) , Decadence is a rollicking midsized band with a playlist as long as your arm! Mic Control is the baritone sax player in the band, while Doc sat in (also on the baritone sax) for the evening. The highlights of the night were many...notables sitting in with Decadence that evening included Jason Marsalis (yes, "that" Marsalis family), Brad Turner (Metalwood...Juno and National Jazz Awards galore), Christian Fabian (exceptional bassist...the only bassist we know from Malmo, Sweden), and Adam Cormier (ex-Nanaimo drummer, now based in Montreal).

Yes, we had to do it again...or at least DJ Doc did since MC Mic Control was up gigging on Quadra Island with the Tina Jones Band. There is something about Big Bands from the 70's and the way they covered the pop tunes of the day...last week we gave you Doc Severinson, and this week we returned with Maynard Ferguson's somewhat overwrought version of the Beatles "Hey Jude". I can say "somewhat overwrought", as I saw Maynard's group perform that very number (The Doctor will not say when, as that would age him and make him considerably less hip). It was a real show stopper, with members of the band fanning out into the audience for the climax of the piece! We miss you, Boss...

Woe is us...well, at least MC Mic Control...the mighty Vancouver Canucks are no longer in the hunt for Lord Stanley's mug. The Canucks were defeated by the usurpers from Chicago, and have now joined the Toronto Maple Leafs out on the golf course.

The Loom, however, is always victorious! A mashup from someone new to the scene, Mocha Thunder, was previewed this week and it shows lots of promise. We're sure we'll be hearing more from this young pup. If you're looking for curiosities from the 70's in a big band vein, check out Doc Severinson's version of King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King"...it's rich in 70's goodness!

Playoff season is still upon us...some of you may remember back in the day when hockey season actually ended before May! The 'nucks are in tough with the 'hawks, and it looks like some of these series will go the full seven games. The Loom, on the other hand, always comes at ya with Game Seven intensity...you won't see us on the golf course before the season is over! May 1st brings us to the second round of the NHL playoffs, and the Canucks are ahead of the Blackhawks 1-0. This is a source of great joy and delight to MC Mic Control, while DJ Doc is still moaning about the Toronto Maple Leafs missing the playoffs for what seems to be the 478th straight year. This also means that Doc will have to suffice with living vicariously through ex-Leafs and current Canucks Mats Sundin and Kyle Wellwood.

Being good Canadian lads, we trundled off to the good ol' hockey game! Vancouver Giants vs. the Kamloops Blazers, to be exact. Private suite, hobnobbing with the hoi polloi...it was a grand evening. We met Vancouver music impressario Bruce Allen, Boston Bruins young star Milan Lucic, and we came within a crooner of meeting Michael Buble. Special thanks to Warren and Marie for being our gracious hosts for the night, and to Lynner the Spinner and DJ Josh Gellman for looking after the Loom for the night!

It was a very gratifying show...the Doctor was flying solo (natch) as MC Mic Control was performing the announcing chore at a couple of basketball games. Part way through the playlist, you'll notice a few carefully crafted tunes as part of a set that dealt with (amongst other things) small household appliances, dependency issues related to the aforementioned small household appliances, and a typical response to such situations. All in good fun, of course...the situation is well in hand.
